Gilder looking for win in first Senior PGA event
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (Feb. 3) -- Rookie Bob Gilder blistered the back nine for the second straight day and grabbed the lead after 36 holes Saturday in the Royal Caribbean Classic.
Gilder had four birdies and an eagle on the back nine in his first Senior PGA event, the first full-field tournament of the year.
Using the Modified Stableford scoring system, which places a premium on birdies and eagles, Gilder had 15 points Saturday for a two-day total of 22.
Gilder, who had to earn his way onto the Seniors Tour by winning at the National Qualifying Tournament last fall, held a one-point lead over Larry Nelson and Tom Kite.
Leonard Thompson and John Jacobs were next with 19 points.
Sunday's final round at Crandon Park Golf Club shaped up as a shootout, as nine players were within five points of the lead.
The scoring system breaks down this way: 8 points for a double-eagle, 5 for an eagle and 2 for a birdie. A par is 0 points, a bogey minus 1 point and a double-bogey or higher minus 3.
Gilder made up 12 points on the back nine, which was highlighted by an eagle-3 at No. 14, where he rolled in a putt from about 85 feet.
