Furyk's big impact
Jim Furyk has a unique golf swing -- the club moves outward and to vertical on the backswing, then he utilizes an excessive amount of lateral slide on the downswing -- an unconventional motion perhaps, but at impact everything is perfect.
The golf ball is only affected by the impact position -- not what you do to get there. An incorrect impact position guarantees inconsistency. To achieve a perfect impact position, it helps to have a balanced setup, a powerful, dynamic pivot and a consistent, on-plane swing pattern, but I have witnessed people who have all of these things and still suffer from inconsistent ball striking. Why? An incorrect impact position.
A perfect impact position consists of the following:
- Forward leaning shaft (ie. the grip end of the club is closer to the target than the clubhead)
- Flat left wrist
- Bent right wrist
- Open hips
- Square Shoulders
- Balanced posture, as at address
- Square clubface
- Club shaft and right forearm on the same plane
