Nicklaus may pass on Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. (Dec. 21) -- Six-time Masters winner Jack Nicklaus said Thursday that his performance in events leading up to the tournament will determine whether he plays in 2001.

"I'll play a couple of tournaments before the Masters," Nicklaus said during a teleconference call for the EMC Golf Skills Challenge. "If I get to the Masters and think I can compete, I'll play. If I don't, I won't play."

The tournament is scheduled for April 5-8 at Augusta National Golf Club.

Nicklaus has won more professional majors (18) than any golfer in history and is one of five men who have won all four majors in his career.

In 41 appearances at the Masters, Nicklaus has made the cut 37 times and holds numerous tournament records. He last won the tournament in 1986, setting a record for oldest Masters winner at age 46.
