The Bottom Line Brings Great Rewards to the Top

The charities involved with The Honda Classic are involved in a variety of ways, from assisting in operational tasks to the marketing of the event. Throughout the years the Classic Foundation has disbursed $4.5 million dollars to worthy South Florida charities.

It is with the assistance of these find charity groups and the help of over 1,200 other volunteers that great strides have been made at The Honda Classic. Through new and effective operational methods, and the expanded role of marketing that each charity has, the Classic Foundation has generated more dollars for charities, as well as given the Classic one of the most prestigious looks and standards of any professional sporting event.

Some of the groups that benefit are: Make-A-Wish Foundation, Downtown Lions Club, Coral Springs Basketball, Coral Springs High School Band Parents, Fraternal Order of Police, Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary, Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, Florida Parks and Recreation, Lutheran Ministry in Christ Youth, Civil Air Patrol, Taravella High School Band Parents, St. Andrews Catholic Church Auxiliary, Junior Golf Association, and Southern Chapter PGA.

The South Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America has been a major player in the success of The Honda Classic. Stemming back to the event’s inception at Inverrary, the Scouts have assisted in making the tournament the best possible event in South Florida.

Participating in a major sporting event like the Classic, provides the opportunity for many young men to mix and work with other segments of society and the community.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

Scouting is a major reason why crime and delinquency figures are down in South Florida. With over 35,000 Scouts and hundreds of adult leaders and supporters, it is no wonder that the South Florida Council is regarded as one of the best in the United States. The Classic Foundation is proud to be affiliated with such a fine working group, which will be changing its role with the event for the 1991 tournament. The Scouts have jumped in with both feet to give a greater boost to The Honda Classic’s marketing efforts. The large 100-plus member board of the South Florida Council will act as ambassadors for the Classic throughout the year, opening doors, and informing decision makers of the values of The Honda Classic. As you can see, the fruits of all of our volunteer marketers are very visible.

The Honda Classic is pleased to announce the joining of hands with The Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities (RMCC). The RMCC will begin its participation with the 20th Anniversary of the event in 1991.

The main goal of the RMCC is to improve the lives of children. In order to achieve their goal they raise money for other nonprofit organizations such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, to help fund projects that specialize in health care and medical research, education, arts, or social and civic services.

By volunteering over 5,000 hours in such areas as marketing, refuse pickup, water and fruit disbursement, and supplies. The Honda Classic and the RMCC are sure to prosper by this union. The Honda Classic welcomes the RMCC and looks forward to their participation in what looks to be the best year for this tournament.

The Boys Clubs of Broward are major players that have assisted in elevating the quality of the Classic. They have given countless hours in the operations of the event as well as generating nearly $200,000 each year in sales of ticket packages, pro-am spots and hospitality centers.

The Boys Clubs of Broward County are in the process of making a needed change to include the girls. The projected date of completion for all the Clubs is 192, according to David Hughes, Executive Director of the Broward County Boys and Girls Clubs.

Because of this, the public needs to be made aware of the organization’s philosophies and services. Another aspect that should be emphasized is the benefits realized by the communities that house these facilities. Programming for each Club is done on an individual basis, however, all of the Clubs in some way incorporate social recreation, health and physical education, cultural enrichment, personal adjustment, and citizenship/leadership. These are found in activities such as arts and crafts, computer programming, league sports, dental clinics and seminars.

Another facet of all the Clubs is recognition of outstanding members. As you look around each club, photos of smiling faces recognized for outstanding achievements hang on the walls. This recognition helps get the members enthused about participating in the different activities.

Many people not associated with the Clubs wonder how the Clubs are able to help the community. One of the benefits is the overwhelming 50 percent drop in the crime rate since the inception of the Clubs. By giving these youths a place to go, we are enabling them to use their energy and imagination in a positive and productive manner. They are also gaining a respect for themselves which in turn will lead to a respect and trusting of others.

The Boys and Girls Club work never ends as the population in Broward County keeps growing. A survey of the area shows that 11 more Clubs are needed to help all the other youths who have nowhere else to turn. Your support today will make you feel good tomorrow.

What a story! What a show! Where else in professional sports do you get such value and to assist charities at the same time. At The Honda Classic, the bottom line always makes our winner charity. Plan on getting more involved next year.
