The 2000 Venue: Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Lake Manassas,
Virginia.
The Presidents Cup: Features 12 players from the United States
competing against a like number of players representing countries outside of
the United States and Europe. The United States won the inaugural event in
1994 (20-12) and again in 1996 by the narrowest of margins (16 1/2 - 15
1/2). The United States will seek to regain the Cup after losing to the
International Team (20 1/2 - 11 1/2) in December 1998 at Royal Melbourne
Golf Club, Australia.
Method of Play: Match-play, including foursomes (two-man teams in
alternate shot), four-ball (two-man teams in better ball) and singles (18
holes at match-play). The order of play during the first two days of
competition (foursomes or four-balls) is determined through mutual agreement
of both team captains.
The Event Guidelines: The Presidents Cup competition consists of
32 matches played over four days. Foursomes will be played Thursday
afternoon, four-balls and foursomes will be played on Friday, with another
round of four-balls played on Saturday. All 12 players compete in singles
matches on Sunday. All matches are worth one point each with a total of 32
points available. Each singles match is played to conclusion as needed. No
singles matches will be halved until one team has won 16 1/2 points and the
Cup outright, after which the remaining singles matches may be halved after
18 holes and result in one-half point for each team. If the Presidents Cup
is deadlocked at the end of singles play on the final day, there will be a
sudden-death playoff between two players designated in advance by the
respective captains.
U.S. Eligibility: Members of the 2000 United States Team were
selected based on official PGA TOUR earnings from the start of the 1999
season through the 2000 PGA Championship, which
concluded August 20. All money earned in 2000 was doubled. The eligibility
standings were used to select 10 members for each squad. Two ³Captainıs
Choices² round out the 12-man teams.
International Eligibility: International Team members for the
Presidents Cup in 2000 were chosen on the basis of the Official World Golf
Ranking at the conclusion of all worldwide events ending on Sunday, August
20, 2000. The International Team does not include players who are eligible
for the European Ryder Cup Team.
Revenues and Profits:As is the case with virtually all activity
involving the PGA TOUR, charity is the ultimate winner of the Presidents
Cup. There is no purse for the players. Net revenues are divided into
equal shares that the players and captains designate for charities or
golf-related projects of their choice. Contributions in their names are
made through PGA TOUR Charities, Inc. The Presidents Cup generated
$1,550,000 for charity in its first two playings. Charitable contributions
from the Presidents Cup in 1998 totaled $2.9 million and benefited 70
charities in seven countries.
Chairman: Bill Clinton, President of the United States, will be
the honorary chairman for the 2000 Presidents Cup.
