Leggatt earns first PGA Tour victory
Updated: 2/25/2002
Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) - Ian Leggatt fired a final-round, eight-under 64 on Sunday to capture the Tucson Open by two shots over Loren Roberts and David Peoples. His 20-under-par 268 total was good for his first win on the PGA Tour and was the lowest score in this event since 1988.

"It hasn't sunk in yet," said Leggatt, who matched his career-low round with the 64. "I'll be able to fix my schedule now. We're expecting a baby in May, and with my exempt situation, I can maybe take two or three weeks off."

Leggatt needed to hold on down the stretch to combat Roberts, who shared the lead with Leggatt at 18-under par after Leggatt bogeyed the 13th hole. Roberts, playing in the group ahead of Leggatt, committed the first mistake at the par-four 16th.

Chris Smith (65), Loren Roberts (70), Scott Simpson (66), David Peoples (68) and first-round leader Michael Allen (71) share fourth place at nine-under 135.

Updated: 2/23/2002
Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) - Heath Slocum, who earned his PGA Tour card through the Buy.com Tour's "battlefield promotion" for three wins in 2001, fired an eight-under 64 on Saturday to take the third-round lead of the Tucson Open. His 54-hole total of 16-under-par 200 gives him a one-shot edge over Andrew Magee and overnight leader Brandel Chamblee.

Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez is alone in fourth place at 14-under par after a third-round 65.

Slocum made a move late in his round Saturday at Omni Tucson National Golf Club.

Top seeds continue to tumble at Match Play Championship
Updated: 2/22/2002
Carlsbad, CA (Sports Network) - Sergio Garcia and David Toms each posted 1-up victories Thursday to become the only top-10 seeded players to advance to the third round at the WGC-Match Play Championship.

A day after the top three seeds -- Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and David Duval -- were eliminated in shocking upsets at La Costa Resort, No. 5 Ernie Els, No. 7 Retief Goosen, No. 8 Davis Love III, No. 9 Vijay Singh and No. 10 Chris DiMarco were all sent packing after losing tight second-round matches in Southern California.

Thirteen of the 16 matches held Thursday went at least 17 holes, with nine going 18 or beyond.

Mattiace grabs first career title at Nissan Open
Updated: 2/18/2002
Pacific Palisades, CA (Sports Network) - Len Mattiace earned his first PGA Tour title in 220 career starts Sunday at the Nissan Open. The 34-year-old from Jacksonville, Florida, posted a final-round 68 at Riviera Country Club to win by one stroke over Rory Sabbatini, Brad Faxon and third-round leader Scott McCarron.

"It's just a great feeling," said Mattiace. "I'm just so happy that I hung in there on the back nine, made a few birdies, and at least had a chance."

McCarron held a three-shot lead early on the back nine and was ahead by two with just three holes to play. But he bogeyed out of a bunker at the 16th then made a curious choice with his third shot from off the green at the 18th. The California native and graduate of nearby UCLA wound up missing a six-foot par putt that would have sent the tournament to a playoff for a second straight year.

Pacific Palisades, CA (Sports Network) - Scott McCarron eagled the par-five 17th hole on Saturday en route to a six-under 65 and the third-round lead of the Nissan Open. His three-day total of 14-under-par 199 puts him one shot ahead of overnight leader Toru Taniguchi and two in front of Len Mattiace.

McCarron found the fairway on 17 and hit a low second shot that found the left fringe. He rolled in the 50-foot eagle putt to leapfrog over Taniguchi and grab sole possession of first at 14-under par.

Pacific Palisades, CA (Sports Network) - Toru Taniguchi tacked a four-under 67 onto his opening-round 66 to move atop the leaderboard Friday at the Nissan Open. His two-day total of nine-under-par 133 left him one shot ahead of Scott McCarron, Len Mattiace, Brad Faxon and first-round leader Jesper Parnevik.

Bob Tway, who tied for second at Riviera Country Club last year after falling short in a record-tying, six-man playoff, finished two back after a 68, while David Duval recovered from two early bogeys to shoot two-under 69. Duval headed into the weekend knotted at six-under 136 with J.J. Henry (67), Tommy Armour III (69) and David Peoples (70).

Pacific Palisades, CA (Sports Network) - Jesper Parnevik made two eagles in a round of six-under 65 and grabbed the lead in Thursday's first round of the Nissan Open at Riviera Country Club. He finished one shot ahead of David Peoples, Billy Andrade, Toru Taniguchi and last week's winner Jose Maria Olazabal.

Bob Tway, who was part of the six-man playoff won by Robert Allenby here last year, climbed within a stroke of the lead but bogeyed his 16th hole. He carded a four-under 67 to finish two off the pace with Tommy Armour III, Esteban Toledo, Brad Faxon and David Duval, the highest-ranked player in the field this week at No. 3 in the world.

PGA Tour money leader Chris DiMarco shot 68 to head a group of eight golfers at three-under par.
