Gotemba City, Japan (Sports Network) - Ernie Els and Retief Goosen combined to par the second playoff hole in Sunday's alternate-shot format to capture the WGC-EMC² World Cup for South Africa at the Taiheiyo Club in Japan.

"I played with Ernie once before in a World Cup and it's nice to win it with him," said Goosen, who teamed up with Els to tie for sixth place at the 1993 event in Florida. "It's been a great week."

Denmark's Soren Hansen, who watched with mouth agape as teammate Thomas Bjorn rolled in a clutch birdie from 12 feet at the 18th in regulation, had a chance to extend the playoff but missed an eight-foot putt to save par.

Kiawah Island, SC (Sports Network) - The American team captured 7 1/2 of a possible 12 points in the Sunday singles matches to capture the UBS Warburg Cup by a single point, 12 1/2 - 11 1/2.

The American team got off to a solid start thanks to a surprise performer. Captain Arnold Palmer, who lost his two team matches on Friday and Saturday, handled his counterpart Gary Player, winning 2 & 1.

The match was not as close as the score indicated as Palmer gave away some holes at the end. Palmer grabbed a 4-up lead and had a chance to close out the match at the 15th, but missed a six-foot par save.

Updated: 7/21/2001
Brett Quigley fired a 10-under 62 Friday to grab a three-shot lead at 15-under 129 after 36 holes of the B.C. Open.

The 62 missed the course record at En-Joie Golf Club by one shot, as Hal Sutton posted a 61 in 1995 and Fred Funk matched the record four years later. Quigley's 129 also missed Joey Sindelar's 1987 36-hole record by one shot.

Mark Hensby and Jonathan Kaye share second at 12-under par, while Jim McGovern and first-round co-leader Edward Fryatt are knotted in fourth at minus-11.

The other first-round co-leader, Ty Tryon, a 17-year-old amateur who will be entering his junior year of high school in the fall, struggled to an even-par 72 Friday and fell into a tie for 19th at seven-under par.
