Field Set for Senior Tour Skills Challenge

MIAMI -- Eight of the greatest names on the SENIOR PGA TOUR, including 2000 Player of the Year Larry Nelson and two-time Royal Caribbean Classic defending champion Bruce Fleisher, will compete for a $24,000 purse Tuesday in the 2001 SENIOR TOUR Skills Challenge at Crandon Park Golf Course.

Irwin cashes in at Senior Skins

Hale Irwin, given a reprieve when Jack Nicklaus holed a birdie putt to force an extra hole, made a 3-foot birdie putt to win the Senior Skins Game on Sunday.

The three skins gave Irwin a total of seven, including the last six, and $320,000. Nicklaus could have won by purposely missing his 4-footer on the final hole, but he matched Gary Player's birdie to extend the event.

Senior Tour: Nelson picks up where he left off

Larry Nelson picked up right where he left off last season in the first Senior PGA Tour event of the year.

Nelson won the MasterCard Seniors Championship on Sunday, shooting a 6-under-par 66 for a one-stroke victory over Jim Thorpe.

Nelson was the Senior PGA Tour's player of the year last season.

Gibson off to hot start in Hawaii

Fred Gibson matched the course record with an 8-under 64 on Friday to take the first-round lead in the MasterCard Championship.

Bruce Fleisher, Leonard Thompson shot 66s while Larry Nelson, Jim Thorpe and Dave Eichelberger opened with 67s.

Strong finish lifts Nelson into the lead

Larry Nelson carded three birdies and an eagle over the last six holes Saturday to vault atop the leaderboard through two rounds of the MasterCard Championship.

Nelson tied the course record with a 64 at Hualalai Golf Club, and his 13-under-par total of 131 matched the 36-hole mark set by Gil Morgan in 1998.
