THE WOODLANDS, Texas (April 21) -- Joe Durant birdied two of the last three holes in a round of 1-under 71 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead after the third round of the Shell Houston Open.

Durant, who shared the first-round lead with Lee Janzen, was two shots off Janzen's pace going into the 16th hole Saturday. Durant birdied No. 17 to tie Janzen, and pulled ahead when Janzen bogeyed the final hole.

Durant, with two victories this year, had a 9-under 207 total. Janzen's late falter gave him a 73 and a 208 total. Hal Sutton was another stroke back at 209 after a 71.

This Week in Golf

Annika Sorenstam is breaking LPGA records in bunches -- the 18-hole scoring record (a 59 at the Standard-Register PING), the greatest final-round comeback (from 10 behind, at last week's Office Depot), the most consecutive wins (four and counting, tying her with Mickey Wright and Kathy Whitworth). Now, if she could only solve the this timing thing.

With Tiger Woods winning the sort-of-Slam two weeks ago at the Masters, Sorenstam -- and the LPGA -- has been cast even more into the PGA Tour's formidable shadow.

(April 17) -- Don't cry for Argentina, which is emerging the past two weeks as a world golf power. First Angel Cabrera at the Masters, and now Jose Coceres at the WorldCom Classic. From this country of 70,000 golfers on the east coast of South America, they have emerged from impoverished caddy backgrounds with hopes and aspirations of golfing fortunes abroad.

Cabrera and Coceres -- two names to remember for future majors.

No way Jose!

"When you can't see, you can't see," Mayfair said.

The playoff was stopped Sunday evening after two holes, where the two matched pars.

Jose Coceres needed three additional holes and a little luck Monday to beat Billy Mayfair in a playoff at the WorldCom Classic for his first PGA Tour title.

It was the first Monday finish at Harbour Town since Doug Tewell beat Jerry Pate in a playoff in 1980.
