Sutton is rock steady in Houston
Updated: 04/25/01
He's one of America's rocks. Steady. Strong. Not afraid. To say what he thinks. A leader. A winner. A soon-to-be Ryder Cup captain who commands the respect of every player on tour because of what he does on the course and how he pulled his once-shattered career back together again.

It's hard to remember the days when Hal Sutton would settle in at the end of the driving range, embarrassed to hit a shot, wondering when the downward spiral would end. He was a little boy lost, a talent trying to fight his way through an unending swirl of uncertainty.

Tour Insider
Updated: 04/24/01
(April 24) -- It's a tough league, professional golf. Sergio Garcia was talking about it last week in Spain. You go 19 months without a win, like he has, and you're an underachiever. "Just because you do not win, it does not mean you are a bad player," the 21-year-old Spaniard said. "Is Davis Love a bad player? I forget how many seconds he has, but it is a lot. Of course, it is all about winning. I know that. I accept that. But I have plenty of time."

Not everybody has the time Garcia has. Take Hal Sutton for example. He turns 43 this weekend, and as fullback tough as he is, it took 365 days before a victory would come his way.

Hal Sutton shot a 3-under-par 69 in windy conditions Sunday for a three-stroke victory over Joe Durant and Lee Janzen in the Houston Open.

Sutton, who earned $612,000 for his 14th PGA Tour victory, finished with a 10-under 278 total.

Janzen and Joe
Updated: 04/21/01
Lee Janzen, trying to win the tournament that got away from him in 1998, shot a 4-under 68 Friday to take a one-stroke lead in the Shell Houston Open.

The two-time U.S. Open winner had consecutive bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9, missing makable putts, but birdied three of his final four holes for a 9-under 135 total for 36 holes.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (April 21) -- Joe Durant birdied two of the last three holes in a round of 1-under 71 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead after the third round of the Shell Houston Open.

Durant, who shared the first-round lead with Lee Janzen, was two shots off Janzen's pace going into the 16th hole Saturday. Durant birdied No. 17 to tie Janzen, and pulled ahead when Janzen bogeyed the final hole.

Durant, with two victories this year, had a 9-under 207 total. Janzen's late falter gave him a 73 and a 208 total. Hal Sutton was another stroke back at 209 after a 71.
