After 94 tries, Hoch finally wins
Updated: 05/02/01
The Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic, forever the Gee-Gee-Oh to devotees who had a fondness for the 63-year-old tournament before corporate America did, does the best it can. It tries to attract the best golfers in the world, but many of them don't come. It used to be the weather; now it's the calendar and the fact that Tiger Woods endorses the wrong make of car.

Last week only seven of the top 40 golfers in the World Ranking were on hand, but the weather was great, the flowers were out and the purse was $3.5 million.

Where would golf be without Tiger?
Updated: 05/02/01
NEW YORK (May 2) -- The four-week stretch after the Masters until the Byron Nelson Classic often is referred to as the "dead zone" on the PGA Tour. It's a time when compelling competition gets lost amid questions about the strength of the fields.

It's when Tiger Woods takes a month off.

While Woods was arranging the trophies from his four consecutive major championships, Jose Coceres, a 37-year-old Argentine who learned to play golf with branches and rocks, was winning at Hilton Head.

Show time

Even when Scott Hoch is having a good time he looks a little bit like he has just bitten into a lemon that was even more sour than he expected.

And even when Hoch is having a good time he manages to say things that make it seem like he has just earned $6.30 an hour cleaning out a cesspool instead of $630,000 for four days of playing golf.

A Greater power

Scott Hoch was wondering if he was ever going to get it going Sunday in the final round of the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic.

Then he felt inspiration from an old friend -- the late Payne Stewart. "I just told him to try to help us get through the day, and I really felt he was out there today," said Hoch, who used Stewart's former caddie, Mike Hicks.

No worries

GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 28) -- Scott Hoch flew some iron shots over the greens at the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic. But he promised not to misjudge his competition after taking his first 54-hole lead since 1998.

And he warned a trio of non-winners not to misjudge his desire to win again on the PGA Tour.

"If Tiger [Woods] was a shot back I might be a little bit worried," said Hoch, who shot a 5-under-par 67 Saturday to go to 13 under heading into the final round of the $3.5 million event.

Updated: 04/27/01
Fitting in on the PGA Tour is important to Mike Sposa. Mission accomplished at the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic on Friday.

Sposa, in his third full season, made a 2-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to close out a 6-under 66 for a one-shot lead over Scott Simpson after two rounds of the $3.5 million event. Sposa had a 10-under 134 total. Simpson, the first-round leader, shot a 69.
