Peaking Toms
Updated: 05/07/01
It's not something that even LSU golfers normally hear -- chants of "LSU! LSU! LSU!" and "Go Tigers!" It certainly wasn't what Phil Mickelson expected.

It was Sunday afternoon in the Compaq Classic, but for David Toms, a Louisiana native who played for LSU, it was more like Saturday night in Death Valley.

Phil's Big Easy
Updated: 05/05/01
NEW ORLEANS (May 5) -- Phil Mickelson, playing in his first tournament since finishing second in the Masters, shot an 8-under 64 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead in the Compaq Classic.

Mickelson had nine birdies -- including five straight -- and a closing bogey to finish at 20-under 196.

"Winning would mean a lot to me," said Mickelson, ranked No. 2 in the world. "I've had a number of opportunities this year where I've come up just short -- seconds and thirds.

61 ... the sequel
Updated: 05/04/01
NEW ORLEANS (May 3) -- Paul Stankowski, who hasn't won on the PGA Tour since 1997, shot a course- and tournament-record 61 Thursday and held a three-stroke lead after the first round of the $4 million Compaq Classic.

Stankowski, whose last victory came in the Hawaiian Open four years ago, had six of his 11 birdies on the front nine of the 7,116-yard English Turn course.

After the Masters, Phil Mickelson needed some down time. A three-week respite apparently left him more rested than rusty.

Mickelson followed up a first-round 66 with another one Friday that left him tied with Brian Gay for the lead in the $4 million Compaq Classic.

"It's starting to feel a little bit more comfortable now, standing on tee shots and knowing a little bit on what side I might miss it, and that allows me to minimize my mistakes," Mickelson said.

This Week in Golf
Updated: 05/03/01
You know it's officially time for Tiger Woods to come back and play when 45-year-old Scott Hoch wins a tournament at a site he was complaining vociferously about earlier in the week (something to the effect that the Tour was making courses too easy by thinning out the rough to accomodate longer, wilder hitters).

The short-hitting Hoch went out and bunted his way to rounds of 68, 68, 67 amd 69 to beat Brett Quigley (of the Buy.com Tour Quigleys) and Scott Simpson by two shots.

After 94 tries, Hoch finally wins
Updated: 05/02/01
The Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic, forever the Gee-Gee-Oh to devotees who had a fondness for the 63-year-old tournament before corporate America did, does the best it can. It tries to attract the best golfers in the world, but many of them don't come. It used to be the weather; now it's the calendar and the fact that Tiger Woods endorses the wrong make of car.

Last week only seven of the top 40 golfers in the World Ranking were on hand, but the weather was great, the flowers were out and the purse was $3.5 million.
