A roaring day
Updated: 11/04/00
Tiger Woods knocked down the flags and got a couple of nice knocks out of the trees. When his crazy ride in the Tour Championship ended Saturday, he was right where everyone expected him to be -- in the lead.

Woods birdied five of his first eight holes to put David Duval out of the picture, then hung on for a 4-under 66 that left him tied with Vijay Singh after the third round.

Farewell to 'Light Horse'
Updated: 11/01/00
For "Light Horse" Harry Cooper, who died last week in White Plains, N.Y., at age 96, golf was a game of a lifetime as it has been for few others. Cooper was swinging a club as soon as he could stand up and became one of golf's best players in the 1920s and '30s. He gave lessons at Westchester (N.Y.) CC until he was 93 and was the longest-serving member of the PGA of America.

Palmer's position
Updated: 10/31/00

ORLANDO, Fla. (Oct. 28) -- They secretly assembled on Thursday at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, and it wasn't as much a meeting as it was a mending. David Fay, executive director of the United States Golf Association, described the dialog as "frank and honest," adding that it would continue. Arnold Palmer, a man described by many as "Mr. USGA," was pleased with the outcome. "I'm very happy with everything," he said Friday night from his home on the club's property. "We had a good meeting."

Presidential party
Updated: 10/22/00
The Americans got their revenge in the Presidents Cup and gave captain Ken Venturi the perfect ending to his career.

Hammered and humiliated in Australia two years ago, the American team -- and yes, they were a team -- played inspired golf from the opening match and turned the tables on the International team.

United States just 2 1/2 points away from Cup
Updated: 10/21/00
The eight countries that make up the International team are indeed playing under one flag in the Presidents Cup. Right now, it's a white one.

The Americans didn't need Tiger Woods to build a seemingly insurmountable lead Saturday, winning four out of five best-ball matches to take a 14-6 edge into the final day, which should be packed with as much drama as watching grass grow.

Campbell and Goosen roll to win to start Europe's comeback
Updated: 10/20/00
A day after being shut out in opening matches, the International team came roaring back Friday with some lopsided wins to get back in the Presidents Cup.

Michael Campbell and Retief Goosen won the first match of the day 4 and 3 over Hal Sutton and Paul Azinger, and the International team added a second point minutes later when Greg Norman and Nick Price blew out Jim Furyk and David Duval 6 and 5.
