Just call her Mrs. 59!
Updated: 03/20/01

Pia Nilsson knew the power hiding in the document she handed 19-year-old Annika Sorenstam over a decade ago, and she knew the teenager's ever-inquisitive mind, flair for analysis and obsession with consistency would gobble up the remarkable notion contained in the writing: Every hole on the golf course could be birdied in a round.

Every hole.

Annika soars to 59
Updated: 03/16/01
Annika Sorenstam became the first woman to shoot a 59 in an LPGA tournament, breaking the previous record by two strokes.

The day after saying she goes for a birdie on every hole, Sorenstam almost did it -- shooting 13-under-par Friday in the second round of the Standard Register Ping.

"It was an incredible day, obviously," Sorenstam said.

Sheehan to captain Solheim Cup
Updated: 03/15/01
(March 15) -- Patty Sheehan was appointed captain of the U.S. team that will try to win back the Solheim Cup next year against Europe and avoid some of the acrimony that has marked the last two matches.

"I look forward to the path in front of me," Sheehan said Wednesday.

The 2002 matches will be played at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn. The United States leads the overall series 4-2 and has never lost on home soil.

Updated: 03/15/01
Kris Tschetter wasted little time giving herself some breathing room at the LPGA's Standard Register Ping.

Taking advantage of an early start and greens softened by dew, Tschetter shot a record 9-under-par 63 Thursday for a two-shot lead over Se Ri Pak and Annika Sorenstam.
