Scranton chirps way to lead at AFLAC
Updated: 10/19/00
Nancy Scranton made the most of prime scoring conditions Thursday, reeling off birdies on the final four holes for a 7-under 65 and a one-stroke lead after the first round of the AFLAC Champions.

"There wasn't much wind today and there were some pins you could get at today, as much as it's ever going to be," said Scranton, who was a rookie on the U.S. team at the Solheim Cup two weeks ago.

Wild ride to lead at Samsung for Inkster
Updated: 10/14/00
Juli Inkster, a self-described "boring mother" with two young daughters, was living dangerously at the Samsung World Championship.

Inkster's adventurous third round at Hiddenbrooke on Saturday included seven birdies, four bogeys, a wince-inducing double bogey and a spectacular eagle. It added up to a 3-under 69 that put her four strokes ahead of Annika Sorenstam.

Inkster stings back at Samsung
Updated: 10/13/00
If Juli Inkster keeps playing this way, she'll be more worried about being stung than being caught.

Undeterred by yellow jackets and a late charge by Pat Hurst, Inkster shot a 5-under 67 on Friday to take a three-stroke lead after two rounds of the Samsung World Championship.

Nobody was telling Annika Sorenstam to replay this chip shot.

The Swedish star, still smarting from a controversial decision in the Solheim Cup last weekend, holed a 35-foot birdie chip on the 15th hole en route to a 3-under 69 a share of the first-round lead Thursday in the Samsung World Championship.

It had been a long time in coming, but the Europeans finally pulled off a 14½–11½-point victory over the Americans for the 2000 Solheim Cup.

It was an event plagued by relentless rain in all but the opening and closing ceremonies of the sixth biennial staging of the USA vs. Europe match-play tournament.

Solheim Turns Sour
Updated: 10/08/00
Sophie Gustafson of Sweden and England's Trish Johnson stayed unbeaten in three matches as their European team won two fourball matches in the Solheim Cup Saturday before rain washed out play for the day.

More rain was forecast for Sunday and Monday. Organizers have decided not to play past Monday with the leader at that point declared the winner.
